'Taking part today made me happy': Heritage Open Days 2026
What a day we had this past Saturday! About 200 visitors came to see us - double the number we welcomed at our first Heritage Open Day two years ago.
It was wonderful to bring together all the different strands of our project Coins and Crosses: Seeking the Anglo-Saxons in Winfarthing and Waveney, which is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
At this year's event, visitors could:
See recent local metal detecting finds and speak with detectorists Joe Edwards-Gill and Nick Bateman
Get hands-on with Anglo-Saxon inspired clay and embroidery activities with Kate Welton and Marie Mallen from Designermakers21
See the beautiful work created by residents at De Lucy House in Diss and Oak Lodge in Attleborough with Suffolk Artlink, and have a go at some of the activities themselves
Meet Dale Banham, who has created our new learning resource
Meet the Lakenheath Warrior (aka Ross Harvey)
Watch the short films about the Winfarthing lady and Anglo-Saxon life created by The Offshoot Foundation with local young people
Try out our new digital kiosk, which will shortly be permanently housed in St Mary's church in Winfarthing (thanks to Tom Lucking, who found the Winfarthing lady, for unveiling it)
Sample a whole variety of delicious locally home-made cakes
Thank you so much to everyone who has worked with us on this year's event, it was a huge team effort and it was lovely to have everyone together celebrating and learning about the Winfarthing lady and our local Anglo-Saxon past.
